| A pit-dwelling having a length of more than 10 meters is called a long house. At the Sannai-Maruyama site, the biggest pit-dwelling has a length of about 32 meters and a width of about 10 meters. Since many are found near the center of a settlement, there are theories that they were used for gatherings, community workshops, and for housing. |
