Explanation Named for its shape, which resembles a bucket stretched up and down. Cylindrical potteries are classified into lower (Kaso) and upper (Joso) types according to the vertical relationship of the strata and differences in shape and design. They have been excavated mainly in Aomori and extend as far north as western Hokkaido and as far south as Akita and central Iwate. Cylindrical Kaso-typelower-layer pottery was used approximately 5,900 to 5,300 years ago.
